This news comes as a bit of a shock to me this morning. Dan O'Bannon has died. I've said it millions of times, but "Alien" is my all-time favorite film. Now, true, David Giler and Walter Hill were the script doctors on that film. True, also, that Ridley Scott was the director--but the kernel of the idea had to come from somewhere, and neither the best directing in the universe nor the best script doctoring ever could do anything without that initial kernel.
We have to remember, too, that his story "The Long Tomorrow" was one of the first real cyberpunk stories, prefiguring both "Bladerunner" and Neuromancer.
Sad day for science fiction writing.
